Bluesky Challenges ‘Sports Twitter’ by Introducing NBA Playoff Feature

by admin

Bluesky is currently in beta testing for a new feature aimed at enhancing the user experience during the ongoing NBA playoffs. This innovation will showcase a red border with the label “live” around posts from the NBA’s official account whenever a game takes place. Users who click on the NBA profile picture will be redirected to the promoted events, even if that means navigating away from the Bluesky app.

Rose Wang, COO of Bluesky, emphasised the platform’s intent, stating, “We aren’t trapping you in Bluesky. We want you to use Bluesky to discover what’s happening.” This approach contrasts with previous efforts by Twitter, which had invested heavily in streaming live sports but ultimately sought to keep users engaged within its platform through various licensing deals.

Unlike Twitter, which relies on advertising revenue, Bluesky is funded by venture capital, allowing them to operate without the same dependence on user activity metrics. The platform can afford to direct users to external sports content rather than incur massive costs for streaming rights. Wang also revealed plans to extend this feature for WNBA games, indicating Bluesky’s commitment to catering to sports fans.

This strategic move is pivotal as “Sports Twitter” remains a significant outlet for real-time reactions and discussions among fans, especially during high-stakes games or trade seasons. While some sports enthusiasts have begun to transition to Bluesky, many remain cautious about fully departing from traditional platforms still buzzing with discussions on the latest sports news. Overall, Bluesky’s initiative highlights its goal to enhance the user experience for sports fans while navigating the competitive landscape of social media.
