OpenAI is set to take a leading role in the development of a 5-gigawatt data centre campus in Abu Dhabi, which could potentially become one of the largest AI infrastructure ventures globally, as reported by Bloomberg. This expansive facility is anticipated to cover around 10 square miles, consuming power comparable to that of five nuclear reactors, thus eclipsing existing AI facilities operated by OpenAI and its rivals.
The Abu Dhabi project is a collaboration with G42, a prominent technology company based in the UAE, and forms part of OpenAI’s broader Stargate initiative. This venture, which was announced earlier this year, aims to establish massive data centres worldwide equipped with advanced computing capabilities to facilitate AI progress. The first Stargate campus in the United States, currently being developed in Abilene, Texas, is expected to produce 1.2 gigawatts of power, rendering the Abu Dhabi site more than four times as powerful.
This ambitious undertaking is part of a wider trend of increasing AI collaboration between the U.S. and the UAE, a relationship that has raised concerns among some U.S. lawmakers. OpenAI’s partnership with G42 was established to enhance AI adoption in the Middle East. During a visit to Abu Dhabi, OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, commended the UAE’s early enthusiasm for AI technologies.
However, the relationship is not without complexities. G42, founded in 2018 and chaired by Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE’s national security advisor, has drawn scrutiny from U.S. officials due to its connections with organisations and individuals associated with the Chinese government, leading to concerns over potential access to sensitive American technology.
In response to rising pressure from U.S. lawmakers, G42’s CEO announced in early 2024 that the company would be reevaluating its strategy, affirming the divestment of all prior investments in China and the cessation of its physical presence there. Following this, Microsoft, a significant shareholder in OpenAI, revealed a $1.5 billion investment into G42, also placing its president on G42’s board of directors.
The developments at the Abu Dhabi data centre reflect OpenAI’s broader strategic direction and its commitment to advancing AI capabilities while navigating the intricate geopolitical landscape that shapes international technology collaborations.
