The day following Elon Musk’s 2022 takeover of Twitter, now rebranded as X, journalists found themselves outside the company’s headquarters confronting two men carrying boxes. One of these individuals identified himself as “Rahul Ligma,” a laid-off Twitter engineer. In reality, he is Rahul Sonwalker, and the prank quickly gained traction online. His antics continued when he later assumed the role of a laid-off FTX employee following the collapse of the cryptocurrency exchange.
Despite the tongue-in-cheek persona, Sonwalker is a serious tech professional with a background as an engineer at Uber. He was also part of Y Combinator, where he originally pursued a logistics startup before pivoting to a different venture. Now, at age 27, he has shifted his focus to his AI data analysis startup, Julius, which he founded about two years ago. This innovative platform allows users to analyse and visualise complex datasets and conduct predictive modelling through natural language prompts, quickly attracting over two million registered users.
Sonwalker expressed his mission to make data science accessible to all, stating, “I wanted to build something that would make data science very accessible to everyone.” While similar capabilities exist in tools like ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, and Google’s Gemini, Iavor Bojinov, an assistant professor at Harvard Business School, praised Julius, highlighting that it outperformed other platforms. Bojinov even encouraged Sonwalker to tailor Julius for Harvard’s new course, “Data Science and AI for Leaders.”
The adoption of Julius by Harvard, which educates about 1,000 future business leaders each year, represents a significant endorsement for the startup, now employing a team of 12. Additionally, Sonwalker secured a seed funding round led by Talia Goldberg from Bessemer Venture Partners, although he has remained tight-lipped on the specifics of the financial deal.
When reflecting on whether his “Rahul Ligma” persona helped in establishing Julius, Sonwalker noted that early on, it garnered some attention, but its influence has diminished in recent times. As the startup navigates the competitive landscape of AI data analytics, Sonwalker aims to solidify Julius’s position as a user-friendly tool in the tech ecosystem.
