On Wednesday, TikTok announced significant enhancements to its accessibility features, including the introduction of AI-generated ALT text for photos, a high contrast mode, and alignment with device-level bold text preferences.
Earlier this month, TikTok began allowing creators to add ALT text to their photos, making it possible for users who rely on screen readers to grasp the visual content through verbal descriptions. Now, in a bid to further accessibility, TikTok is testing an AI solution that automatically generates ALT text for images when creators haven’t provided it. This initiative aims to ensure that users with visual impairments can better navigate and engage with visual content on the platform.
The introduction of AI-generated ALT text aligns TikTok’s efforts with similar features that have been available on Instagram since 2018. The new functionality is expected to enhance accessibility for visually impaired users, underscoring TikTok’s commitment to inclusivity.
In addition to the ALT text feature, TikTok is rolling out a high contrast mode. This mode can be activated via a “color contrast” option found in the app’s accessibility settings, which enhances the visibility of text, icons, and other interface elements. This adjustment is particularly beneficial for users with low vision or those who find low contrast challenging to navigate.
Moreover, TikTok now accommodates bold text preferences set at the device level. This means that if a user has enabled bold text on their device, all in-app text will automatically display in a bolder format, improving readability for those who prefer or need this style.
In a blog post, TikTok expressed its belief that “when people feel seen, heard, and supported, they’re empowered to share their stories and connect with others.” The company views accessibility not merely as an obligation but as an opportunity for innovation and inclusivity within its community.
These latest features complement TikTok’s existing suite of accessibility tools, which already includes auto-generated captions for videos, dark mode, text-to-speech capabilities, and adjustable text sizes throughout the application. With these developments, TikTok is taking important steps toward becoming a platform that caters to a diverse range of users, promoting a more inclusive digital space for all.
