On Wednesday, TikTok unveiled its latest accessibility enhancements aimed at improving user experience for individuals with visual impairments. The updates include the rollout of AI-generated ALT text for photos, a high contrast mode, and features that respect users’ device-level bold text settings.
A few weeks ago, TikTok introduced the ability for creators to manually include ALT text with their photos, a feature designed to assist users who rely on screen readers. The addition of AI-generated ALT text will further this goal by automatically describing photos in instances where ALT text is not provided by users, aiming to make the platform more inclusive for those with visual disabilities. This initiative aligns with Instagram’s similar use of AI for ALT text since 2018.
The new high contrast mode will allow users to activate a “color contrast” option within the app’s accessibility settings, enhancing the visibility of text, icons, and UI elements. This feature is particularly beneficial for individuals with low vision or those sensitive to low contrast displays.
Moreover, TikTok has adapted to accommodate users’ device settings regarding bold text. This means that when users enable bold text on their devices, TikTok will automatically display all in-app text in bold, improving readability for those who prefer or require stronger font styles.
In a recent blog post, TikTok highlighted its commitment to fostering an inclusive environment. They stated, “We know that when people feel seen, heard, and supported, they’re empowered to share their stories, create, and connect with others in meaningful ways. That’s why we’re focused on continuously building products that serve everyone.” The company perceives accessibility not solely as a duty but as a chance to innovate and enhance community engagement.
These new tools join the existing suite of accessibility features on TikTok, which already includes automated captions for videos, a dark mode, text-to-speech functionality, and adjustable text size options throughout the app.
With these advancements, TikTok is taking significant steps to ensure that all users, regardless of their abilities, can engage with the platform effectively.
