Google Reports Over 1 Billion Daily RCS Messages Sent in the U.S.

by admin

In the lead-up to Google I/O, Google provided an update on the uptake of the RCS (Rich Communication Services) protocol, which enhances traditional SMS by introducing features such as high-resolution multimedia sharing, typing indicators, read receipts, and superior group chat management. The company reported that RCS now facilitates over a billion messages daily across the United States, based on data averaged over the past 28 days.

This development is significant, as Google has long advocated for Apple to integrate RCS support into its iOS platform. Previously, iPhone users receiving texts from Android devices experienced limitations such as pixelated images and challenges managing group conversations when mixed with Android users. Unlike Apple’s iMessage, group chats with Android users lacked the ability to be named, add or remove participants freely, and didn’t allow users to exit chats at will. Additionally, emoji reactions from Android users were not visible directly, necessitating follow-up texts to inform others of reactions.

However, with the release of iOS 18 in fall 2024, Apple has finally incorporated RCS support into its Messages app. Despite this upgrade, RCS messages from Android users still appear in green bubbles on iOS. This strategic choice seems aimed at maintaining a perception hierarchy between Apple and Android, particularly relevant among younger users in the US, where the preference for blue message bubbles has solidified the iPhone’s popularity among teenagers.

Interestingly, Google did not disclose further statistics on RCS, such as specific user counts or details on carrier support, leaving some questions unanswered regarding the overall reach and adoption of the service.
