On Tuesday, TikTok announced the launch of its innovative feature, “TikTok AI Alive,” which enables users to transform static images into dynamic videos directly within TikTok Stories. The feature is specifically accessible through the app’s Story Camera and leverages artificial intelligence to generate short videos that incorporate movement, creative effects, and atmospheric changes.
For example, users can upload a photograph featuring elements like a beach scene or a group selfie, and TikTok AI Alive can animate it—bringing clouds to life, shifting hues in the sky, or subtly portraying gestures and expressions. This follows TikTok’s introduction of a text-to-image AI generator a few years prior and positions the platform ahead in the evolving social media landscape, where competitors like Instagram and Snapchat offer similar text-to-image features but have yet to launch direct image-to-video capabilities. Notably, Snapchat has announced plans to roll out its version soon.
TikTok plans to clearly mark videos that are AI-generated with an “AI Alive” label, embedding C2PA metadata to ensure that users can identify AI-created content, even if shared outside the platform. According to TikTok, security and safety are fundamental to their development processes; the technology undergoes several checks to guard against policy violations. Specifically, TikTok’s moderation technology reviews uploaded images and AI prompts before any AI Alive video is presented to creators. Users can also report any videos they believe contravene app guidelines, with TikTok conducting final safety checks before content goes public.
To create an AI Alive video, users need to access the Story Camera, select a photo from their Story Album, and click on the AI Alive icon available on the editing toolbar. This move marks a significant step for TikTok as it enhances user creativity while ensuring a responsible approach to AI content generation, aiming to foster a safer community.
