Federal Investigators Turn Their Focus to Tesla’s Robotaxi Ambitions

Federal safety regulators have reached out to Tesla with detailed inquiries regarding its forthcoming robotaxi service. This comes as part of an investigation into the company’s “Full Self-Driving (Supervised)” software, particularly focusing on its effectiveness in low-visibility conditions. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), through its Office of Defects Investigation, is seeking clarity on how Tesla will assess its vehicles and driving automation technologies for public road use.

Tesla has made headlines with its plans to initiate a paid ride-hailing robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, set for launch in June. A recent post by Tesla on social media appears to have spurred the interest of federal regulators, wherein the company detailed that its supervised ride-hailing service is currently operational for a limited group of employees in Austin and the San Francisco Bay Area. They reported that over 1,500 trips and 15,000 miles of driving have been completed, which they believe will help refine their Full Self-Driving networks and related services.

The NHTSA began its investigation into Tesla’s Full Self-Driving software in October 2022, following reports of four crashes occurring in low-visibility situations. Tesla’s FSD software is an advanced driver assistance system that requires drivers to maintain control by keeping their hands on the wheel, even as it partially manages driving tasks such as braking and steering.

Looking ahead, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has indicated that the robotaxis will employ a future iteration of the Full Self-Driving software, one that does not require supervision. The NHTSA is specifically examining whether the FSD technology can effectively detect and respond to various low-visibility challenges, including sun glare, fog, and airborne debris.

In a letter from May, the agency posed numerous questions to Tesla aimed at understanding if the driving system intended for the robotaxi service shares characteristics with the FSD Supervised model. The inquiries included details on the planned fleet size, the specific models of vehicles to be utilised, and how Tesla plans to ensure safety within the robotaxi system. Additionally, the NHTSA requested a description of Tesla’s strategies to guarantee the safety of robotaxi operations amid reduced visibility conditions, which could encompass a range of weather and environmental factors.

As Tesla moves forward with its ambitious robotaxi plans, the scrutiny from regulators highlights the ongoing concerns surrounding the safety and reliability of autonomous driving technologies in various real-world scenarios.
