General Motors (GM) has appointed Sterling Anderson, an experienced figure in the autonomous vehicle (AV) sector, to a newly established role as Vice President of Global Product and Chief Product Officer. This position will encompass the full spectrum of GM’s vehicle offerings—both gas and electric—spanning hardware, software, services, and user experience, effectively impacting nearly all areas of the automaker.
Anderson, who will begin his new role on June 2 and be based at GM’s Mountain View Tech Center in California, has previously co-founded Aurora, an autonomous vehicle company, where he served as Chief Product Officer. His departure from Aurora was notable as it occurred shortly after the company launched a commercial self-driving truck service in Texas. In discussions with GM’s leadership, including Chair and CEO Mary Barra, Anderson became increasingly enthusiastic about the transformative opportunities at GM.
Describing his new role, Anderson highlighted the expansive scope, which allows for substantial impacts on millions of lives through improved vehicle experiences and enhanced road safety. He will lead various teams, including those focused on vehicle and manufacturing engineering as well as battery and software management—supervising notable figures like Kurt Kelty, who heads battery propulsion and sustainability.
Mark Reuss, GM’s President, emphasised the necessity for the company to evolve its vehicle offerings to meet rising customer expectations. He believes that the integration of software and hardware, coupled with shorter development times, will be vital in enhancing the customer experience. Anderson’s extensive background in automotive engineering and software innovation positions him perfectly to guide GM’s future direction.
Despite his success at Aurora, where he helped secure significant funding and partnerships, Anderson felt compelled to make the switch to GM, stating that the recent milestone achievements at Aurora did not deter him from pursuing this new challenge. His background includes leadership in Tesla’s Autopilot program before co-founding Aurora in 2017 with other industry leaders.
Education-wise, Anderson holds both a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in robotics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), ensuring he comes equipped with exemplary technical expertise to lead GM in its modernisation and electrification efforts.
With Anderson at the helm of product development, GM aims to advance its mission of creating a future where vehicles enhance safety and deliver exceptional user experiences. This appointment comes at a pivotal time as the automotive industry shifts towards more sustainable and technologically advanced solutions.
