Fidji Simo, currently the CEO of Instacart, is set to join OpenAI as Application CEO later this year, as announced by the AI firm on Thursday. Simo, who has been a member of OpenAI’s board for over a year, will phase out her responsibilities at Instacart in the upcoming months.
In a blog post, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed that he will retain oversight of the company’s key areas, including research, compute, and applications, with Simo reporting directly to him. Altman expressed confidence in Simo’s qualifications to lead the Applications division, which focuses on how OpenAI’s research can benefit society.
Simo brings extensive experience in product management and monetisation, having spent over a decade at Meta before her tenure at Instacart. While at Meta, she played a pivotal role in the development of various advertising initiatives, including the launch of ads on Facebook’s News Feed and overseeing product development for Facebook Video. Under her leadership, Instacart successfully went public in 2023.
Upon her departure from Instacart, Simo will continue as chair of the company’s board and has indicated that a current management member will step in as CEO, with an announcement expected shortly. In a statement on social media, Simo expressed her excitement about joining OpenAI, highlighting the organisation’s potential to dramatically elevate human capabilities and her commitment to ensuring its applications serve the public good.
Altman noted that Simo would also be instrumental in scaling the company’s traditional operational functions, though further details on these aspects were not disclosed.
With her transition, Simo aims to leverage her extensive background to help OpenAI maximise its research and enhance its impact on the world. Her appointment is viewed as a strategic move for the company, aligning leadership with its ambitious goals for advancing artificial intelligence.
