Snapchat has recently announced that its Snap Map feature has surpassed 400 million monthly active users, marking a significant milestone for the app. Launched in 2017, Snap Map originally allowed users to view their friends’ locations and explore public snaps globally. Over time, the feature has evolved to help users discover local attractions and activities.
This growth in Snap Map’s user base is vital for Snapchat as it provides a competitive edge against peers like Instagram and TikTok, which lack real-time social discovery features akin to those of Snap Map. In response, Instagram has been observed developing its own “Friend Map” functionality that would enable users to see the locations of their friends in real-time.
Ceci Mourkogiannis, Snap’s VP of Product, commented on the achievement, noting that Snap Map is one of the most widely used mobile mapping applications globally. She expressed excitement over its ongoing growth, emphasising how it fosters connections among users while highlighting local events, thus contributing to a more intertwined global community.
Snapchat has continually enhanced Snap Map’s functionality, recently introducing a “Footsteps” feature that allows users to track their travel history and explore how much of the world they have visited. Additionally, the company has implemented “Promoted Places,” which helps users discover new locations while providing brands an opportunity to promote their venues directly on the map.
Overall, Snap Map not only serves as a tool for social interaction but also enhances the app’s appeal in a competitive social media landscape.
