Mitsubishi Negotiates to Source New Electric Vehicles for Australia and New Zealand from Foxconn Subsidiary

by admin

Mitsubishi Motors is currently negotiating with Foxtron Vehicle Technology, an electric vehicle division of Taiwan’s Foxconn, to develop an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) electric vehicle intended for the Australian and New Zealand markets. This vehicle is expected to launch in the latter half of 2026.

On Wednesday, Mitsubishi announced that it had formalised these negotiations through a memorandum of understanding with Foxtron, indicating a commitment to collaboratively develop the new EV. Foxtron operates as a partnership between Foxconn and Yulon Motor Co, a Taiwanese firm known for its assembly of automobiles for Nissan.

In addition to this venture, Mitsubishi and Nissan are leveraging their tripartite partnership with Renault to enhance their electric vehicle offerings in North America. The Japanese automaker revealed plans to introduce a rebadged version of the Nissan Leaf in North America, slated for release in the latter half of 2026. Concurrently, Nissan intends to offer a rebranded plug-in hybrid electric vehicle model, produced by Mitsubishi, in North America next year.

Furthermore, Mitsubishi aims to market rebranded electric vehicle models manufactured by Renault across Europe, highlighting the company’s strategy to capitalise on international collaborations to expand its EV portfolio.

In summary, Mitsubishi’s collaborations with Foxtron and its alliance with Nissan and Renault signify a broader strategy to strengthen its position in the evolving electric vehicle market, both locally in Australia and New Zealand, as well as internationally in North America and Europe. These partnerships are expected to play a crucial role in enhancing Mitsubishi’s competitive edge in the growing EV landscape.
