Users may start to mistrust the information they receive if AI-generated content infiltrates their discussions, which could ultimately jeopardise Reddit’s identity and financial stability—particularly as the site now partners with OpenAI to utilise its content for AI training.
In response to the unsettling nature of the experiment, Reddit condemned it as an “improper and highly unethical experiment” and lodged a formal complaint with the university responsible for the project. This situation hints at a worrying trend of increasing manipulation through AI on social media platforms, raising concerns about the potential misuse of generative bots for various agendas.
To combat manipulation and preserve the human element of Reddit, CEO Steve Huffman indicated upcoming measures that may challenge the platform’s legacy of anonymity. In a recent announcement, he mentioned that Reddit intends to collaborate with third-party services to verify users’ humanity. This new direction marks a significant shift away from the minimal personal information previously required for account creation.
Huffman elaborated that while Reddit would require more information to ensure users are indeed human and, in some cases, of legal age, it would not seek to know users’ names or personal identities.
