Instacart has debuted a new app called Fizz, tailored for delivering snacks and drinks, aimed at enhancing social gatherings. Announced on Tuesday, the app is exclusively designed for users aged 21 and over, focusing on simplifying the party-planning process for family and friends.
The innovative feature of Fizz allows a host to invite guests to contribute items directly to a shared party cart, eliminating the hassle of bill-splitting post-event. Instacart’s Chief Product Officer, Daniel Danker, explained that while current practices involve using platforms like Venmo for cost-sharing, Fizz streamlines this process, aiming to make it effortless for users.
The launch signals a shift for Instacart in diversifying its offerings and broadening its customer base, particularly targeting a younger crowd that may not typically engage with traditional Instacart services. The app allows hosts to create a party cart easily, share a link with friends, and invite them to browse and add items—all without needing to download the app themselves.
Once guests add their selections, the host can place an order for delivery, which can be scheduled or immediate, for a flat fee of just $5. Notably, guests are exempt from delivery fees, making it more appealing for group gatherings. Fizz specifically caters to the needs of a younger demographic, focusing on drinks and snacks, as opposed to the broader offerings of Instacart which include groceries and other retail items.
With Fizz, users can earn “Snack Bucks” for every drink purchase, incentivising further purchases with discounts on snacks. Items in the cart are sourced from nearby grocery stores through Instacart, ensuring quick and efficient delivery by an Instacart shopper.
The concept of Fizz emerged from a growing trend where social gatherings increasingly involve shared contributions. Danker noted that younger generations, such as Gen Z and millennials, prefer a collaborative approach to hosting, considering diverse dietary needs and preferences. Fizz addresses this with a straightforward, cost-effective solution.
While primarily aimed at group events, Fizz also has the potential to attract individual users who might find it more user-friendly than the Instacart platform, which is typically used for regular grocery shopping. The app’s light touch and the absence of a membership requirement make it an accessible option for one-off purchases.
In an additional collaborative move, Instacart has partnered with the event planning app Partiful, which will include a Fizz link in invites, streamlining the party planning process even further. This partnership allows hosts and guests to easily navigate their group cart directly from the event page.
Fizz enters the market as a fresh alternative to other alcohol delivery services like Drizly—previously acquired by Uber—which has since ceased operations. However, Fizz’s unique social aspect and focus on broader snack options set it apart from its predecessor.
The app complies with relevant laws surrounding alcohol sales and is currently available in various states across the U.S., including California, Florida, and New York.
