Stripe Guides iOS Developers on Sidestepping Apple’s App Store Commission

by admin

Payments processor Stripe has stepped up to assist iOS developers in circumventing Apple’s commission on App Store transactions. This support comes in the wake of a recent court ruling in the Apple-Epic Games antitrust case, where Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers reprimanded Apple for disallowing external payment links in apps, reaffirming a prior injunction that demanded policy changes.

In response to this development, Stripe’s product manager Michael Luo shared on X that the team has prepared a concise guide aimed at helping iOS developers implement payment solutions through Stripe outside their applications, thus allowing them to avoid Apple’s standardized commission rates.

While Apple has amended its policies to allow external payment links, it only slightly reduced its app store commission and imposed warnings regarding the potential risks of using third-party payment systems. Judge Rogers asserted that Apple’s updated policy neither adhered to the court’s directive nor aligned with fair competition standards, prompting her to order immediate changes.

Stripe’s newly released documentation elaborates on how developers can set up links in their apps to process payments for digital goods via Stripe Checkout. This method will redirect users to a secure payments page hosted by Stripe, creating an alternative checkout experience on iOS.

Implementing Stripe’s solution does involve more complexity compared to Apple’s in-app purchases, as developers must establish and manage their own payment processing systems. However, Stripe’s transaction fees of 2.9% plus $0.30 per transaction represent a significantly cheaper option compared to Apple’s 30% commission, or even the reduced 15% for certain subscriptions under Apple’s Small Business program.

This announcement has already stirred enthusiasm among developers, evidenced by a surge of engagement on social media. David Heinemeier Hansson, a prominent critic of Apple and the co-founder of 37Signals, commended Stripe’s initiative. He noted that Apple’s courtroom defeat has the potential to usher in new business opportunities for app creators that were previously restricted by the costly App Store framework.

Hansson remarked that this pivotal change could lead to the emergence of diverse business models that were untenable under Apple’s earlier pricing structure. With this development, iOS developers may feel empowered to explore innovative monetization strategies without the constraints imposed by Apple’s previous policies.
