During Meta’s Q1 2025 earnings call, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that Instagram Threads has reached over 350 million monthly active users, reflecting a growth of 30 million users since the previous quarter when it recorded 320 million users. This marks a notable acceleration in Threads’ expansion, as the platform added 30 million users in the first quarter of this year, surpassing the 20 million it gained in Q4 2024.
Threads’ growth trajectory is significant when compared to competitors like Bluesky, a decentralised social media platform that currently has around 35 million users. In just one quarter, Threads has amassed nearly as many new users as Bluesky, highlighting its competitive edge in the microblogging arena.
While Threads remains relatively small compared to Meta’s well-established platforms—Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp—its rapid expansion is indicative of its emerging status in the social media landscape. Meta reports that a combined total of over 3.4 billion people engage with at least one of its applications on a daily basis, underscoring the company’s vast user base.
Zuckerberg expressed optimism during the call, suggesting that the growth of Threads signals it is on a trajectory to become a significant social app for Meta. As it develops, Threads aims to solidify its position within the increasingly crowded microblogging market.
