On Wednesday, Wikipedia unveiled its new artificial intelligence strategy for the next three years, emphasising that it will not replace the invaluable community of editors and volunteers with AI. Instead, it plans to harness AI technology to develop features aimed at eliminating technical barriers, allowing contributors to focus on their work without being bogged down by technical complexities.
The initiative comes amidst growing concerns that AI could jeopardise jobs in content creation. However, Wikipedia reassures that it aims to utilise AI as a means to facilitate tasks rather than substitute human roles. Generative AI will be implemented in specific areas where it can be highly effective, such as in automating mundane tasks, enhancing the discoverability of information, and providing editors with more time for essential discussions regarding edits and updates.
Additionally, the AI strategy will assist in tasks like automating translations and streamlining the onboarding process for new volunteers. Chris Albon, the director of machine learning at the Wikimedia Foundation, expressed a strong belief in the importance of how the organisation approaches AI. He highlighted that their work will be guided by long-standing values regarding privacy and human rights, ensuring a human-centred strategy that prioritises user agency and transparency. Furthermore, the commitment to open-source and open-weight AI tools will be a significant focus, along with a nuanced approach towards multilingualism, which is fundamental to Wikipedia.
Albon pointed out the growing significance of preserving Wikipedia’s knowledge base, especially in light of the challenges posed by emerging generative AI technologies, which have been known to produce erroneous or misleading information. This forward-thinking strategy demonstrates Wikipedia’s commitment to enhancing the platform while safeguarding the central role of its human contributors.
