Yelp Unveils AI-Powered Voice Assistants for Dining and Service Businesses

Yelp announced on Tuesday its plans to implement AI-driven “voice agents” aimed at assisting service providers and restaurants with call management. These agents will be capable of responding to basic queries and executing tasks such as adding customers to restaurant waitlists.

The technology behind these voice agents is designed for ease of use, eliminating the need for intricate setup procedures or API integrations. They will utilise existing business metadata, which includes pronunciation guides, personalised voice greetings, and call forwarding protocols. For restaurants, for instance, Yelp’s voice agents can integrate with management software to relay reservation details to customers following calls.

In addition to managing calls, the agents will offer features such as automatic spam filtering and call analytics, transferring complex inquiries to human staff when necessary. Businesses will receive a summary of each call, including a transcript and a recording, to enhance their operational efficiency.

Yelp’s Chief Product Officer, Craig Saldanha, highlighted the challenges professionals often face in difficult environments where answering calls becomes unfeasible. The intention behind developing these voice agents is to capture leads that would otherwise go unnoticed.

The AI voice technology is powered by OpenAI’s Realtime API, which allows the agents to facilitate comprehensive conversations through Yelp’s extensive knowledge graph, enabling them to engage in follow-up questions effectively.

Yelp is dedicated to continuous improvement, regularly assessing new models to enhance results in areas such as latency, speech recognition accuracy, and overall user experience. Saldanha suggested that voice technology will eventually become standardised, with companies distinguishing themselves based on the quality of data and the AI’s ability to manage customer inquiries—a competitive edge he believes Yelp possesses.

By leveraging these AI advancements, Yelp aims to not only streamline operations for businesses but also improve the overall customer experience.
