In recent years, a growing number of women have turned to egg freezing as a means to preserve fertility, influenced by career priorities and later marriage ages. However, the high cost of egg freezing, typically ranging from $10,000 to $15,000 per cycle, makes it prohibitive for many women during their optimal fertility years, specifically in their 20s and early 30s.
Cofertility, a startup co-founded by Lauren Makler and Halle Tecco, aims to address these issues by offering a no-cost egg freezing option. In exchange for the procedure, participants agree to donate half of their retrieved eggs to individuals facing fertility challenges. The startup recently secured $7.25 million in Series A funding, bringing total investment to $16 million.
The inspiration for Cofertility arose from Makler’s personal struggle with a rare health condition diagnosed in 2018, which raised concerns about her ovarian health and led her to explore egg freezing and donation. This experience revealed the exorbitant costs associated with egg procurement, especially for specific donor profiles, leading her to liken it to surge pricing, reminiscent of Uber’s model during peak demand.
Fortunately, Makler successfully conceived a child naturally, but her journey prompted her to create a platform that connects women interested in freezing their eggs with those seeking donor eggs. While egg sharing is not a new concept, Cofertility claims to be distinctive with its “Split” program, which can scale the availability of eggs far beyond what is typically offered by clinics.
Currently, Cofertility boasts a diverse pool of donors, with over half possessing graduate degrees. The costs incurred by intended parents include only the egg retrieval and coordination fees, allowing them to sidestep direct payment to donors, thus reducing overall expenses.
While Makler avoids labeling Cofertility as a marketplace, she acknowledges its marketplace-like functionality. Her overarching goal is to destigmatise egg donation, emphasising that there is no shame in how one becomes a parent. By aiding donors who wish to freeze their eggs while also supporting intended parents, Cofertility presents an innovative and socially conscious alternative in the realm of fertility preservation and egg donation.
