Internal emails from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, unveiled during an antitrust trial led by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), reveal his apprehensions regarding the acquisition of Instagram and its potential impact on Facebook. Zuckerberg expressed concern that Instagram might cannibalise Facebook’s user engagement, leading to what he described as a “network collapse” of the more profitable platform.
In a May 2018 email to key executives, Zuckerberg outlined his worries that the strategies being employed within the Meta family of apps were flawed. He noted that data suggested user engagement on Facebook declined significantly when individuals began using Instagram, raising alarms about Instagram’s rapid growth harming Facebook’s relevance. He proposed the need for integration between Meta’s apps to fortify Facebook’s standing in the social media landscape.
The FTC is currently trying to establish that Meta operates a social networking monopoly. It claims that Meta’s acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp have enabled it to maintain a dominant market position. The evidence presented includes communications showing Zuckerberg’s recognition of Instagram’s competitive threat, even after its integration into Meta.
Zuckerberg identified that Instagram’s success was largely attributed to its connection to Facebook, but he cautioned that if Instagram continued to expand independently, it could detract from Facebook’s user engagement. He expressed concerns that an imbalance may lead to adverse effects on Facebook, undermining future growth models for both platforms.
To counteract Instagram’s disruptive influence, Zuckerberg suggested reducing promotional efforts towards Instagram and pushing for innovative cross-platform features to keep Facebook relevant. He envisioned merging functionalities across WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram, although previous attempts at integration have seen mixed results.
Zuckerberg also noted challenges related to Instagram’s leadership dynamics, expressing reservations about openly communicating concerns that might demoralise the Instagram team and jeopardise talent retention, particularly of co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. He went as far as proposing a rebranding initiative to ensure Facebook’s name remained prominent in the user’s mind whenever they used other apps in the Meta portfolio.
Looking ahead, Zuckerberg warned of a “non-trivial chance” that Meta could be forced to separate Instagram and WhatsApp into distinct entities in the coming years, should legal challenges succeed. This foresight highlights the delicate balance Meta must maintain to protect its overall ecosystem of apps. If the FTC succeeds in its case, this could affirm Zuckerberg’s early suspicions about potential structural changes within the company.
In response to the release of these emails, a Meta spokesperson downplayed their significance, suggesting they were old and out-of-context, asserting that they do not detract from the competitive pressures faced by the company.
