HelloFresh, the meal-kit service, has recently integrated 70 all-electric Rivian vans into its operations, marking the company as the first significant client to adopt these commercial electric vehicles since Rivian’s exclusive arrangements with Amazon concluded. This addition makes up nearly 25% of HelloFresh’s delivery fleet and has already resulted in substantial environmental benefits, with an estimated savings of 20,000 gallons of gasoline and a reduction of CO₂ emissions by 200 tonnes, as highlighted in their blog post.
Rivian, an electric vehicle manufacturer known for its two sizes of commercial vans, aims to expand its customer base following the termination of its exclusivity contract with Amazon in November 2023. Although Rivian was preparing its commercial van offerings for a broader market, it officially opened its fleet business to other clients in February 2025. The transitional year was dedicated to enhancing infrastructure, both digital and service-related, and gathering insights from pilot programs with potential fleet clients.
Up until now, while Rivian has been conducting trials with various fleet prospects, HelloFresh has taken the lead as the first company to publicly announce its purchase of the vans for its operations. The move not only illustrates HelloFresh’s commitment to sustainability but also showcases Rivian’s capabilities in the commercial sector.
In addition to catering to new clients like HelloFresh, Rivian continues to manufacture vans for Amazon. The company began production of these vehicles in 2021, following Amazon’s ambitious order of 100,000 vans aimed at minimising environmental impact. This partnership has been significant, especially considering Amazon’s notable $700 million investment in Rivian just months before securing the exclusivity deal.
As of February, Amazon has received 20,000 Rivian commercial vans, further solidifying their collaboration amidst Rivian’s expansion efforts into the commercial vehicle market.
