Instagram Employs AI to Identify Underage Users Falsifying Their Ages and Limit Their Accounts

by admin

Meta has announced that it will utilise artificial intelligence (AI) to identify underage users on Instagram who may be misrepresenting their age to bypass the platform’s safety measures. According to the recent release, if Meta suspects that an account belongs to a teen, it will automatically transition that account into a restricted Teen Account, regardless of the age indicated.

Introduced last year, Teen Accounts provide a tailored experience for younger users, embedding various protective features aimed at enhancing their safety on the app. These safeguards are automatically enforced to limit interactions with adults and control the content accessible to underage users. Notably, users under 16 will require parental approval to modify these settings.

While Instagram has already been employing AI to estimate user ages, this new approach confirms its commitment to ensuring that teens engage with the platform through the appropriate account type. The company previously hinted at this strategy, explaining that it identifies accounts belonging to young users who may claim to be adults through methods such as monitoring birthday posts and receiving tips from other users.

In its efforts to ensure accuracy in this system, Instagram has pledged to allow users to adjust their settings should an error occur. In a blog post, the platform expressed the necessity of adapting to the evolving digital landscape, emphasising the importance of collaboration with parents to maximise the effectiveness of the Teen Account protections.

To further support parental involvement, Instagram will begin sending notifications to parents outlining how they can address the importance of providing accurate age information with their children. The platform encourages parents to verify their child’s account details, including their listed birthdate, as a critical step in ensuring that they remain within safe, protected accounts.

This announcement follows Meta’s recent implementation of similar Teen Accounts on Facebook and Messenger. To date, the company reports that over 54 million adolescents have been enrolled in Teen Accounts worldwide, with an impressive 97% of users aged 13-15 choosing to stay in these safer environments.

Meta’s proactive approach aims to foster a safer online space for younger users while keeping parents informed and engaged in their digital interactions.
