In 2010, Matt Rogers and Tony Fadell, both former Apple engineers, ventured into the realm of home climate control by founding Nest. At the time, it was an unusual focus for technologists, but their commitment spearheaded the creation of the smart thermostat, which has since become a key player in the burgeoning smart home market. Despite its early success, Nest’s evolution has faltered under Google’s ownership, leading to the discontinuation of several original products.

Reflecting on Nest’s trajectory, Rogers commented, “Nest is not necessarily doing everything that I set them out to do years ago,” highlighting the challenges of innovation post-acquisition. Yet, his passion for HVAC systems has endured. “I’ve been thinking about HVAC for a really long time – longer than most,” he remarked, recognising the significant potential for improving energy efficiency and quality of life through better climate control solutions.

Rogers’ enthusiasm has recently led him to take on a new role as an informal advisor for Quilt, a startup focused on heat pump technology. While also advancing his own food waste venture, Mill, and running a philanthropic organisation with his wife called Incite, Rogers has juggled numerous commitments. Now that Mill is stable, he feels prepared to engage more deeply with Quilt by joining its board.

Rogers’ connection with Quilt’s co-founder and CEO, Paul Lambert, began a few years ago, prior to the company’s initial funding round. Their ongoing discussions have fostered a collaborative relationship, with Rogers offering guidance on various challenges faced by the startup. “We talked almost every week, for years,” he shared, underscoring the development of a close professional rapport.

With Rogers on Quilt’s board, the potential for adopting strategies reminiscent of Nest’s successful approach appears promising. Lambert emphasised the company’s commitment to product design and user experience, stating, “We’re really trying to do the Nest playbook.” This focus aligns with global trends, as he noted the increasing demand for cooling solutions due to rising temperatures and affluence. As communities grow wealthier, the necessity for air conditioning and efficient heat pumps escalates, making them essential commodities for those with more disposable income.

In summary, Rogers sees significant opportunities ahead and is enthusiastic about collaborating with a team dedicated to advancing the industry. “It’s good to work with a team that’s carrying the torch,” he affirmed, indicating a hopeful future for innovative climate control solutions.
