OpenAI has announced the launch of a new, “lightweight” version of its ChatGPT deep research tool, aimed at ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Pro users, with rollout starting for all free users as well. The updated tool is powered by the o4-mini model, which, while not as powerful as the full deep research version, allows OpenAI to offer increased usage limits at a lower operational cost.
According to OpenAI, the responses from this new lightweight tool will tend to be shorter yet will still maintain the expected depth and quality. Once users hit the limits of the traditional deep research capabilities, the queries will automatically revert to the lightweight version, ensuring continuous access to research functionalities.
This release coincides with a growing trend in the AI sector, as various companies, including Google with its Gemini, Microsoft through Copilot, and xAI’s Grok, are unveiling similar deep research tools driven by advanced reasoning models. These models have the ability to critically evaluate information and validate facts, making them essential for thorough research tasks.
OpenAI plans to extend the availability of the lightweight deep research tool to enterprise and educational users within the upcoming week, matching the same usage limits as that for Team users. This initiative reflects OpenAI’s commitment to enhancing its offerings in the rapidly evolving landscape of AI-assisted research tools.
