Meta’s new video creation app, Instagram Edits, has made a remarkable initial impact, eclipsing the launch performance of its competitor, CapCut by ByteDance. In its first two days, Edits racked up approximately 702,900 downloads on iOS, significantly outpacing CapCut’s 19,000 downloads during the same period—a staggering 37-fold difference as noted by app intelligence firm Appfigures.
As of now, Edits has achieved a total of 7.1 million downloads, with 1.2 million on iOS and 5.9 million on Android. For context, CapCut managed just 83,500 downloads across both platforms in its first three days, despite being available in only half the global markets at launch. Even accounting for this limitation, Edits holds a substantial lead.
In the U.S. specifically, Edits saw downloads soar to 381,000 within three days, dwarfed by CapCut’s mere 3,400. This translates to a striking 112 times greater usage during Edits’ debut.
The app’s rapid uptake has propelled it to the top of the charts on the U.S. iPhone App Store, achieving the No. 1 spot for overall apps on its first day before settling into the No. 2 position thereafter. This popularity has likely contributed to its ongoing success, illuminating the potential for Meta’s extensive social network to amplify the visibility and downloads of new applications.
Despite its promising start, Edits still trails considerably in terms of overall user base compared to CapCut, which has amassed 1.22 billion downloads globally since its 2020 launch, excluding China.
Reactions from content creators regarding Edits have been mixed. Praise often highlights its user-friendly interface, built-in analytics, ad-free experience, and support for 4K video alongside watermark-free exports. However, critics note that it currently lacks many features present in CapCut, such as templates and various transition effects.
Looking ahead, Edits has the potential to evolve and possibly include a paid tier or advertisements as monetisation strategies, allowing it to compete more closely with CapCut in the long run.
