Snapchat has unveiled its inaugural video generative AI Lenses, as exclusively reported to TechCrunch. These innovative Lenses utilize Snap’s proprietary generative video model. The trio of new AI Video Lenses is accessible to users subscribed to Snapchat’s premium service, Snapchat Platinum, which is priced at $15.99 monthly.
This announcement follows Snap’s introduction of an AI video-generation feature during its Partner Summit last September. According to a Snap spokesperson, the new AI Video Lenses are built upon the latest developments in this technology.
Historically regarded as a front-runner in augmented reality (AR), Snap has also been actively investing in artificial intelligence (AI) over the years, similar to many major tech firms. With the launch of these new AI Video Lenses, Snap is leveraging AI to enhance its competitiveness and offer unique features that are not yet available on competing platforms like Instagram and TikTok.
Initially, Snapchat is rolling out three AI Video Lenses, with plans to introduce additional options weekly. The first offerings include “Raccoon” and “Fox,” both of which depict adorable furry companions snuggling up to users. The third Lens, named “Spring Flowers,” creates a zoom-out effect that showcases the user holding a bouquet in their Snap.

Users can discover the new Lenses via the Lens carousel. After selecting a Lens, they can capture a Snap using either their front or rear camera. The AI video will then be generated and automatically stored in their Memories.
“These Lenses, driven by our in-house generative video model, bring some of the most advanced AI capabilities currently available to Snapchatters in a familiar Lens format,” the company stated in a blog post. “We have a history of being pioneers in delivering cutting-edge AR, ML, and AI tools directly to our community, and we’re eager to see the creativity Snapchatters will unleash.”
Snapchat recognizes that integrating generative AI into Lenses is a natural progression, as users have embraced this format for many years.
While Snap has previously utilized AI technologies from OpenAI and Google for certain features, it is now focusing on developing its own internal models.
Last month, the company introduced an AI text-to-image research model for mobile, which is set to enhance some of Snapchat’s features in the upcoming months. Snap mentioned that by utilizing its in-house technology, it aims to provide its community with high-quality AI tools at reduced operational costs.
