During a recent office hours session on Discord, OpenAI revealed plans to eventually embed its video generation tool, Sora, within its widely-used consumer chatbot application, ChatGPT.
As of now, Sora can only be accessed through a standalone web application that OpenAI launched in December. This tool enables users to generate cinematic clips that can last up to twenty seconds. However, Rohan Sahai, the product lead for Sora, stated that the company aims to diversify the availability of Sora and enhance its creative capabilities.
Sora was initially introduced to creatives and video production firms prior to its launch. Now, OpenAI is taking greater strides to widen the appeal of this AI video generation tool.
Sahai mentioned that OpenAI is working diligently to make Sora available within ChatGPT, effectively linking the two services. He refrained from specifying a timeline for this integration. The version of Sora that eventually makes its way into ChatGPT may not provide the same editing controls as the standalone web app, where users can manipulate and combine clips.
By allowing users to produce Sora videos directly from ChatGPT, OpenAI may be aiming to draw more users to the chatbot. Integrating Sora into ChatGPT could also encourage subscriptions to the premium tiers of ChatGPT, which might include elevated limits for video generation.
One primary reason for launching Sora as an independent web application was to preserve the user-friendly nature of ChatGPT, according to Sahai during the discussion.
Since its debut, OpenAI has enhanced the Sora web platform, adding more options for users to explore community-created Sora videos. Sahai also indicated that OpenAI is quite interested in developing a standalone mobile app for Sora, with the team actively seeking mobile engineering talent.
Furthermore, OpenAI has ambitions to broaden Sora’s capabilities to include image generation.
Sahai confirmed that OpenAI is in the process of creating an AI image generator based on Sora, addressing previously circulating speculation. While ChatGPT already features image generation through OpenAI’s DALL-E 3 model, a Sora-based generator could enable users to produce more photorealistic images.
Sahai concluded by noting that OpenAI is also developing a new iteration of Sora Turbo, the current model powering the Sora web application.
