The emergence of generative AI has transformed software development, marking one of its most significant applications in the past few years. Nevertheless, platforms such as Cursor and Copilot primarily cater to the expertise of trained engineers.
Lovable, a Swedish AI startup, gained significant attention last year by featuring on both Product Hunt and Hacker News. It democratized app creation, allowing users to build applications effortlessly through simple prompts. The company has successfully raised $16 million in a pre-Series A funding round led by Creandum, showcasing remarkable growth metrics.
Lovable empowers individuals to develop what it describes as production-ready software without any coding expertise. Apart from crafting prototypes and websites, its GPT Engineer feature can deploy fully operational web applications.
Currently, Lovable reports a user base of 500,000, with over 25,000 new products being created each day.
Positioned as a European counterpart to American AI coding tools, Lovable claims to have achieved an annual recurring revenue (ARR) of $17 million, thanks to its 30,000 paying subscribers. This positions it as one of the fastest-growing startups across Europe.
Lovable accomplished this remarkable milestone with only $2 million in capital expenditure, following a modest €6.8 million pre-seed funding round last October, which was led by Hummingbird Ventures and byFounders, an angel syndicate.
Founder Anton Osika explained to TechCrunch that Lovable distinguishes itself from other AI-driven coding platforms by being “the best avenue for generating something that genuinely works.”
The platform utilizes a blend of OpenAI, Google Gemini, and Anthropic technologies to create software solutions.
“We’ve observed the creation of hundreds of commercial applications on our platform, at least 25,000,” he mentioned.
Osika, who co-founded Lovable with Fabian Hedin, conceived the idea while working on Depict.ai in 2023. Depict, previously backed by Y Combinator, secured $20 million in funding from notable investors such as Garry Tan’s Initialized Capital, EQT Ventures, and Northzone, focusing on machine learning applications in e-commerce stores.
Osika’s previous endeavors include designing the interface for the computer used by the renowned physicist Stephen Hawking and collaborating with former SpaceX engineers on wheelchair technology.
“I recognized that there’s a significant opportunity to provide the 99% of people who lack coding skills access to a software engineer through AI,” Osika shared with TechCrunch.
Lovable is now looking to enhance its integrations with third-party services, including Supabase for databases and GitHub for code management.
In a statement, Fredrik Cassel, a general partner at Creandum, remarked, “I haven’t observed this level of user enthusiasm for a product since our investment in Spotify. It’s genuinely remarkable. Lovable has the potential to become one of Europe’s next major companies in this new era of AI.”
The funding round also saw participation from angel investors, including Charlie Songhurst (Meta Board), Adam D’Angelo and Thomas Wolf (Hugging Face), and Eric Bernhardsson (Modal).
