What to Anticipate at Amazon’s Alexa Event This Wednesday

by admin

Amazon is set to host a press event in New York City centered around Alexa this Wednesday. With the company not holding a significant device launch since September 2023, we anticipate some exciting announcements.

The event will not be available for live streaming, but TechCrunch will be providing on-site coverage. The event, led by Panos Panay, Amazon’s new head of devices and services and a former Microsoft Surface executive, is slated to begin at 10 a.m. Eastern Time.

The pressure is on for Amazon, which has reportedly incurred billions in losses from its Alexa sector, despite selling hundreds of millions of devices. Sources indicate that Amazon CEO Andy Jassy is urging the hardware team to explore ways to enhance profitability through subscription models, fees, and additional services.

We could learn about one of those new subscription models during Wednesday’s event.

Amazon is said to be preparing to unveil an updated Alexa experience, referred to as Remarkable Alexa, aiming to create more fluid and intuitive interactions akin to ChatGPT. This enhanced service is expected to be priced between $5 and $10 monthly and will reportedly be capable of processing multiple requests in one command and taking independent actions.

Some of these features were hinted at during Amazon’s previous major device event in 2023. The company assured that the new Alexa will be compatible with existing devices and utilize generative AI technology to understand the context of users’ requests for personalized responses.

There’s potential for enhanced smart home functionality as well. The Verge reports that several companies are collaborating on new integrations with Alexa through developer tools introduced by Amazon in 2023. At that time, Amazon revealed partnerships with brands like iRobot and Philips to streamline scene controls and improve Alexa’s comprehension of user intentions.

A significant concern is whether the new AI-enhanced Alexa can address some of the persistent shortcomings of its underlying technology. According to reports from late last year, the forthcoming Alexa was struggling to execute basic tasks such as controlling smart lighting.

Due to the occasional inaccuracies and hallucinations associated with generative AI, the current version of Alexa, built on more rigid technology, often provides more reliable results. The prolonged delays in launching the upgraded version should allow Amazon to tackle potential major issues, though uncertainty remains.

Fortunately, users won’t be compelled to switch to the new Alexa. Reports suggest that Amazon will offer existing device owners the option to continue using the “Classic Alexa” experience if they prefer.

However, it may take some time before users have that option. The Washington Post reports that the launch of the upgraded Alexa was postponed earlier this month after the assistant provided incorrect answers during testing. Insiders indicated that the rollout may not occur until late March or beyond.
