Amazon is set to shut down its Android app store on August 20 of this year. The company notified developers via an announcement that they will no longer be able to submit new applications to the platform.
According to a statement on a support page, the company will also phase out its Coins digital currency, which was used to buy games and apps within the store.
“Effective August 20, 2025, the Amazon Appstore will no longer be accessible on your Android device.
We will also be discontinuing the Amazon Coins program on the same date,” the company detailed on a support page.
Amazon stated that any remaining coins held by users as of August 20 will be refunded.
The company also clarified that the app store will continue to operate on its proprietary devices, including Fire TV and Fire Tablet.
As of now, Amazon has not addressed inquiries regarding the rationale behind closing the app store.
Since 2011, Amazon has sought to rival Google by establishing its own app store ecosystem and had attempted to support its unsuccessful Fire Phone initiative with this store.
Last year, Amazon announced that it would end support for its app store on Windows, where Android apps were available starting March 5, 2025. This program for Windows was initiated in 2021.
