AI Coding Startup Codeium in Negotiations for Nearly $3 Billion Valuation, Sources Indicate

by admin

Codeium, a startup specializing in AI-driven coding solutions, is in the process of securing a new funding round that would value the company at $2.85 billion, as reported by two insiders familiar with the negotiations.

This funding round is spearheaded by Kleiner Perkins, a previous investor, according to the sources.

This new capital influx follows just six months after Codeium, based in Silicon Valley, reported closing a $150 million Series C funding round at a post-money valuation of $1.25 billion. This previous round was led by General Catalyst, with contributions from Kleiner Perkins and Greenoaks. However, TechCrunch has not been able to verify the specifics of the new funding amount.

Attempts to reach Codeium and Kleiner Perkins for comments were unsuccessful.

According to one source, Codeium has achieved approximately $30 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR). This revenue suggests an implied valuation of around 95 times its ARR, which is significantly higher than other AI code editing firms.

In a related development last month, Anysphere, which produces the AI coding assistant Cursor, announced a financing round that brought its valuation to $2.5 billion. Given its reported revenue of $100 million, investors assessed it at a 25 times ARR valuation multiple.

Besides Anysphere, which is seen by many investors as the front-runner in this space, Codeium also competes with other players such as Poolside, Magic, and Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot.

Though the details surrounding Codeium’s advantageous valuation remain somewhat vague, sources indicate that the company wasn’t actively seeking new investments before investors approached them regarding this round.

Codeium aims to set itself apart by focusing on organizational clients rather than individual developers. Last summer, the company informed TechCrunch that more than 1,000 enterprise customers were utilizing the free tier of its platform, including notable names like Anduril, Zillow, and Dell.

In November, the company launched the Windsurfer Editor, designed to autonomously generate portions of code, a feature referred to as agentic AI or “agent mode.” Similar functionalities are offered by competitors like Cursor as well.

Founded in 2021 by Varun Mohan and his childhood friend Douglas Chen, an MIT graduate, Codeium has evolved quickly. Before launching Codeium, Chen worked at Meta, where he focused on developing software for VR headsets, such as the Oculus Quest. Meanwhile, Mohan served as a tech lead at Nuro, a startup specializing in autonomous delivery, where he oversaw the autonomy infrastructure team.
