4chan Returns Online, Claims to Have Been ‘Deprived of Funding’

by admin

4chan has partially returned to operation following a cyberattack that took the notorious image-sharing platform offline for nearly two weeks. The outage began on April 14, when a hacker leaked sensitive information, including a list of the site’s moderators. TechCrunch reported that a janitor from 4chan expressed confidence that the leaked details were authentic.

During the extended downtime, some observers, including journalist Ryan Broderick writing for Wired, prematurely declared the site’s demise. Broderick described 4chan as having evolved from a hub for internet culture into a breeding ground for extremist ideologies and toxic online behaviour, including the infamous Gamergate controversy and far-right movements globally.

In response to these claims, the 4chan team took to social media platform X, questioning the assertion that “4chan is dead.” The site came back online on a Friday, and an official post on the 4chan blog detailed how the breach occurred. According to the post, a hacker, operating from a UK IP address, exploited a “bogus PDF upload” to access the platform’s servers, leading to significant data theft and vandalism before the moderation team could intervene, halting further damage.

The blog described the situation as “catastrophic,” attributing the incident to a lack of skilled manpower and funding to maintain the site’s infrastructure. The management explained that years of pressure from advertisers and payment providers, who were reluctant to associate with 4chan due to activist campaigns, severely limited their operational capacity.

In the aftermath of the hack, the compromised server was replaced, but certain features have been temporarily disabled. Specifically, PDF uploads are no longer allowed, and a board for sharing Flash animations has been taken offline as the team seeks to prevent similar security exploits.

As of Sunday afternoon, while the site’s main pages were operational, functionality for posting images and thumbnails remained non-functional. The 4chan team declared their resolve, stating, “4chan is back. No other website can replace it, or this community. No matter how hard it is, we are not giving up.” This resilience reflects the site’s commitment to maintaining its unique presence on the internet despite recent challenges.
